UK Byte Class Association

I visited Brixham YC on 31 May and was met by Robin Meads (Rear Commodore Sailing). I was made very welcome and had a tour of the facilities. Robin also introduced me to several club members including our proposed Race Officer, and answered my many questions. The sailing area looks fantastic, out in Torbay which is extensive yet safe. The club is primarily a yacht club for adults, with juniors in the dinghies. But the club is however highly experienced at running dinghy events. There is a secure pound for dinghy storage, but space constraints (we are sharing the event with Hornets) means boats will need to be left overnight on their trailers. Launching looks easy down a wide ramp, sheltered from prevailing winds.

We will be having a separate Olympic course from the Hornets. They have employees to run the bar and catering. Prices are therefore reasonable rather than cheap. If we have any particular requests (e.g. picnic lunches to be put on the committee boat) they can cater for them.

Given the time of year it will be wise to book accommodation well in advance.

The only potential problem area I spotted is parking. The club’s own car parks are quite limited and restricted to club officials and members. There is a pay and display car park adjoining the dinghy park at £8 per day or £33 per week. Robin advises that a local employer will allow competitors to use their car park nearby on the Saturday and Sunday (18 & 19 August). Another alternative is on-street parking within reasonable walking distance.
